Borders Authority Publishes First Statistical Release and Perimeter Works Programme

The Borders Authority of the Velocity Interoperability Network today published its first statistical release and the register of the Network's boundary sections. The statistical release covers the transition period from 10 August to 5 September 2026, during which member organisations transferred their boundary functions to the Authority, and records the position at establishment on 6 September 2026.

During the transition period, 214,600 crossings by persons and 38,200 crossings by goods vehicles were recorded at the eight crossing points, together with 4,120 declarations of goods and 96 refusals of entry for goods. Ninety-one per cent of checks on persons were completed within ten minutes. The figures are provisional, having been compiled from the records of member organisations under interim arrangements, and will be revised in the Authority's first quarterly report.

The register of boundary sections records 41.3 kilometres of perimeter in four sections. The northern and southern sections were found serviceable at establishment. The eastern section requires replacement of 3.4 kilometres of fencing, and the western section requires renewal of its lighting. The works programme published today provides for a full survey of the perimeter in September 2026, lighting renewal on the western section in October, fencing replacement on the eastern section between November 2026 and January 2027, and the extension of camera coverage to every crossing point by March 2027.

The Authority will publish statistics quarterly. The next release, covering the quarter ending 30 September 2026, will be published in October. The full release and the register of boundary sections are set out on the Statistics and Perimeter Infrastructure pages of this site.
